Rudy Maxa Podcasts - Traveler Magazine's 50 Walks of a Lifetime
I’ve collaborated with writers from National Geographic Traveler magazine and Apple to produce a series of podcasts titled “50 Walks of a Lifetime.” These free podcasts are, just as the title suggests, walking tours of 50 great parts of the world.
What does that mean to you? Well, if you’re headed to New York City and want to take a walking tour of the architecture and sights of Tribeca, just download the New York City podcast and stroll around at your leisure. Or if Miami Beach is on your agenda, we’ve put together a nice walk through the Art Deco district.
In Paris, it’s the St. Germain des Pres neighborhood on the Left Bank. (That one is worth downloading to hear me murdering the French language, as usual.) In DC, we do the National Mall, that beautiful stretch from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. There are also podcasts of walking tours of Tokyo, Berlin and London.
And we’ll keep adding cities, wilderness treks, and country rambles on Fridays until we hit the number 50. They’re yours for the taking, no charge, using your preferred podcasting tool:

When will you be doing more Europe shows? Love your great production values, class and humor, etc. Keep up the great work! Anything coming on St. Petersburg in the near future? Thanks!

Terry: Thanks so much for your kind comments. I'm in the process of raising corporate underwriting for a sixth series of public television travel shows. Our major corporate underwriter for the first five years, Expedia.com, decided to cease its underwriting efforts. Presuming I'm successful--and I think I will be--we hope to have 13 more shows on the air in the fall of '07 or spring of '08. If St. Petersburg isn't on the list for that season, it surely will be in the future. --Rudy Maxa

Bravo, Rudy! You have cast your spell over Kansas City and we can't resist your soirees at our library! You were the one who told us the wonderful story of your dad with you in Paris, and how you still visualize him there. (Plaza library night). AND you were the one who, when we admitted we were totally in love with Venice, told us the great story of your magnificent night ride down the Grand Canal with your son, and how he may one day vizualize you still there. So Rudy, how come (Central library last night) our beloved Venice didn't even come to mind when you were asked your favorite European city? We still love you, but wish you weren't so fickle!

My husband and I just attended your speach in KC. We wanted to ask, which is your favorite (few?) vacation/retirement place? Thank you, Magda

We're looking for something a little - but probably not too much - non-standard for a 3 week summer family vacation with our 3 teenage daughters. While we can readily find exchange rates, they don't tell us what we'll have to spend for rooms, food and in-country transportation. We're casual travelers, generally avoifing the more expensive hotels and often traveling without advance reservations. So where today is the dollar strong, so we can still travel overseas on a budget? Turkey? Is Greece out? Anywhere in the former iron curtain? South America? Egypt? Tunisia? Etc.? We'd leave from the Northeast, so Asia is not convenient.

Have you ever encountered airline policy or practice on the issue of travel in advance of booking? The airline has directed me to my travel agent, but I am wonder what might happen if I tried the stand-by approach--attempting to get on a flight that's not full? Is it worth going to the airport and trying? Thanks, Dan

Hello Rudy,
My boyfriend and I just got done watching all your Smart Travels on Italy for the 3rd time! We are leaving on Friday for Rome Florence and Venice. We wish you could come with us! Our HD tv was made for shows like yours! Any recommendations for a day trip from Rome to Pompeii as cheaply and safely as possible? We are thinking about the morning EXpress train to Naples then Circumvesuvian train to Pompeii, back to Naples to eat and National Archeological museum. I am completely paranoid about thieves on the train, but we figured it would be cheap this way and try to find a tour when we get to Pompeii or Naples. What do you think? recommendation for pizza in Naples? I heard it's worth possibly getting mugged for!!
Thanks again for a great show.

I can pick up the Barcelona podcast on your rudymaxa.com, but I tunes only offers a 15 minute general overview of upcoming episodes for me to download. I noticed this podcast has been on the airwaves since 2006 and wonder how I can download to my ipod.
Thank you

We LOVE your podcasts for the 50 walks. Are there maps available to go with each walk? We plan to do several of the walks next year.
Thanks much!

What happened to the 50 Walks podcast? I can't see it on Itunes anymore.
Posted by: Dan | Feb 11, 2009 2:07:42 AM
Dan: Thanks for the heads up! I just checked with National Geographic Traveler and learned they've taken down all the walking tour podcasts. Not just on iTunes but also on the magazine's own site. I can't seem to figure out the reason--something about "budgets," but I don't really think it cost 'em anything to have them posted on iTunes. But there you go. If you go the magazine's web site, you can find print versions of walking tours to many cities. I'll remove the link to them at the top of maxablog.com.
Best, Rudy

I cannot find the lifetime walks podcasts, are they still there, I would really like to download them.
thanks

Gayla,
For reasons unknown to me, National Geographic Traveler removed the podcasts of the walking tours I voiced and to which I linked. They were hugely popular here as well as on iTunes. But about a month ago, they disappeared. I'm in the process of learning whether my friends at National Geographic might be willing to make the podcasts available to me (given that they were all free, anyway) so I can host them and provide them. Please watch this space!

I watch your shows on pbs as do many of my students --- I am particularly glad that you are extending your horizon to include Eastern Europe and Russia. Although the shows are good -- you should have your research staff check for accuracy -- On the recent show which I loved on St. Petersburg you made a bad gaff -- You said that the church on the blood (Spas na krovi) was built after the death of Alexander III -- sorry but any Russian schoolchild knows that it was built after the murder of Alexander II -- who liberated the serfs in 1861 -- He was the Tsar Liberator. Since you have a wide following -- please check your facts.
