The Last Low-Cost, All-Biz Class NYC-London Airline Closes

It was only a month ago that I posted a blog item (April 28, 2008) on the only remaining, low-fare carrier, Silverjet, to serve the NYC-London market.  Its competition, MaxJet and eos, had closed, leaving Silverjet as the only all-business-class carrier offering consistently low fares between Newark and London's Luton airports.

Only a few days ago, Silverjet said that while it was experiencing cash flow problems, a major investor was poised to cough up sufficient capital to keep the airline flying.  That clearly didn't work out.  The airline shut down operations today.

With all three low-cost airlines out of business, major carriers such as British Airways, American, United and Virgin Atlantic have more flexibility in pricing their front-of-the-plane offerings, so count on prices going up.  For the moment, L'Avion is the only trans-Atlantic, all-biz-class airline around, flying between Newark and Paris' close-in airport, Orly.

I worry for the survival of L'Avion. I love the all-business class concept, and I have been a customer. With that said, this may have been inevitable, considering the economic climate, the cost of oil and the take-no-prisoners response of big airlines like American. *sigh*

Time will tell for L'Avion, but none of this is a good sign. Also, it has to hurt their business. To be honest, having flown Maxjet and loved it, I considered EOS for a trip this year (since Maxjet was gone by the time I was planning). But I hesitated, wondering what would happen if they folded before my travel date. Sadly, my worries were well founded. I'm glad I didn't buy EOS tickets, but I can't help but wonder if others are hesitating about buying L'Avion tickets for the same reason and if that will hasten its demise. I sure hope not, but it may be happening!

Mr.Maxas,
I enjoy traveling but due to lack of money I am force to confind my travels to the United States.
Because we are people of immigrates, we have almost everything from across the oceans.Yes it may be on a smaller scale but we can still enjoy the world from within "our back yard(s)".
I am getting up in age and have been thinking of going to school to take up photo/journalism.This way I could travel and maybe make a little money to live on plus still travel and enjoy the countryside.
I know that you may have a lot of people thinking and saying that this would be good but you seem to be doing other countries, so could you advice me on where to start?,who to contact?,what subjects are good to cover?,and any input would be helpful!
You can contact me at my E-mail address.
thank you,
Ray Mercer
